It is known as the ‘forgotten’ disease but lung cancer is a stark reality for 40,000 new patients in the UK every year – that’s one every 15 minutes. Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world and it is estimated that there are half a million people at any one time in the UK either developing or suffering from the disease. Even more shocking, the average time from diagnosis to death is just four months and only two in 10 people with lung cancer live longer than a year. But there is hope – the earlier the diagnosis and the start of treatment, the better chance there is of a positive result. That’s why Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November is so important. Pioneered in the UK by The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Relief, Lung Cancer Awareness Month is now in its sixth year. Its aims are to: · to inform and educate the public, and in particular, those at risk, about the importance of early detection and diagnosis.
· to raise the awareness of GP's and pharmacists about the possible diagnosis of lung cancer when considering the symptoms.
· to support patients in their preparation and promotion of a "charter" that will set our a protocol, or good practice, in how they would wish to be treated on and following diagnosis.
In general, there is a low public awareness of the symptoms of lung cancer, which has the Stigma of the smoking disease its there own fault many people who have developed Lung Cancer Have never Smoked!!!!!!!!!! |
